As you read this, I’ll be on silent retreat. The silence is as important as the retreat. I arrange my affairs so that I don’t have to communicate. I turn off all my electronics. My husband handles everything household related, and only speaks to me if necessary: i.e. hurricane approaching! There is precious little science on the benefits of silence, but as someone who has practiced it for at least a week a year for the last 25 years, and as much as a month at a time, I can validate the emerging research findings regarding a diminution in mental chatter. When external stimulus is all but removed, my conceptual elaboration and emotional reactivity decline in concert. This is the deepest rest I know.
