Slow Down to Speed Up | What’s Your Pause Practice?

Smartphone interactions may feel like a break from our workday, but they are a long way from the pause that refreshes. There is no question those little computers in our pockets are extraordinarily useful. They are also weapons of mass distraction, as a friend once cleverly dubbed them. For many of my clients, a pause in the day includes checking in through various connection and communication apps including social media. As this article suggests, “What we get wrong is thinking that just because scrolling mindlessly through social media is unproductive and feels like ‘time out’ we are therefore properly relaxing when we engage in it.” I’m working on a longer article on the importance of pausing and what research tells us are the most beneficial ways to do that. Meantime, this piece in the FT brilliantly sets out the downside of defaulting to our phones. Want to chat about creating a pause practice that actually refreshes? Reach out.
